3-day RCM2 Introductory Training – Starting Tuesday, March 25th, 2025

An in-classroom and interactive 3-day program hosted by the University of Toronto’s Facilities group

About RCM2 Introductory Training

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to RCM2™ (RCMII™) and its principles. It is intended for those interested in understanding RCM2 and how it can be applied to define technically based maintenance and reliability programs.

The application of RCM2 challenges the traditional approach to equipment maintenance by moving from a breakdown and repair mentality to a culture of asset management. It revolutionizes views about maintenance and how maintenance, operations, and engineering should work together to drive asset performance. RCM2 leads to a broader and deeper understanding of the organization’s assets and provides a structured way to formally capture and transfer that knowledge to the rest of the asset stakeholders.

This introduction to RCM2 redefines your understanding of maintenance management. It will completely transform how maintenance and operations people view the development of maintenance programs and their roles and responsibilities in that process. This course applies best practices in answering the seven questions of RCM2 using a real-life case study approach. The participants will explore the techniques required to define a maintenance program in a logical and structured way that recognizes the hidden, safety, environmental, and operating consequences of failure.

Course Content and approach

Course Outline:

The Aladon-based 3-day RCM2 Training will be presented and facilitated by Donald Barry.

  • This 3-day course introduces RCM2. It is an employee involvement process that enables the participant to get more out of their physical assets in terms of Equipment Reliability, Product Quality, Customer Service, Safety, Environmental Protection, and Training while you put less in terms of Predictive Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance, and Corrective Maintenance. The 3-day course itinerary is described below:

Defining the Problem and Gathering Basic Information

  • Defining functions and desired performance standards
  • Defining the ways in which assets can fail to deliver the desired performance (Functional Failures)
  • Establishing root causes of failure (Failure Modes)
  • What happens when failures occur (Failure Effects)

Assessing Failure Consequences

  • Protective and warning devices that are not fail-safe
  • Failures that threaten the safety or the environment
  • Failures that affect production or operations (output, product quality, or customer service)
  • Failures that only entail the direct cost of repair

Assessing the validity of different types of failure prevention and setting task frequencies

  • On-condition maintenance (including condition monitoring and predictive maintenance)
  • Scheduled restoration tasks
  • Scheduled discard tasks

Deciding what to do if a suitable preventive task cannot be found

  • When and how often to do failure-finding routines
  • When to redesign
  • When to run to failure

Packaging tasks into maintenance schedules and implementing suitable planning systems

    • Implementing Reliability-Centred Maintenance
    • Using supervisors, operators, craftsmen, and specialists in RCM2 review groups
    • The role of the RCM2 facilitator
    • Implementation strategies
    • How to get started
  • The session will feature a variety of instructional modes and interactivity.
  • Dialogue is encouraged and specific questions relating to one’s own challenges will be addressed (or responded to outside of classroom time).
  • Examples drawn from actual experience will be used throughout the day, supplemented by individual and group exercises.
  • Those who want themselves and their companies to be leaders rather than followers stand to learn a great deal!
